Dad was very strategic in selecting the University of Central Florida to house his papers. First, UCF is the largest college by enrollment in Florida and the largest overall among U.S. colleges and universities. Second, UCF is strategically located near the heart of one of the world’s largest and most popular tourism destinations. In a very real sense, Orlando is Mecca to the attractions entertainment industry. Third, and very important, UCF’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management is an academic center for managing hotels, restaurants, theme parks, entertainment and events where international faculty gain exclusive industry exposure through paid work experiences and develop important professional relationships with key local hospitality partners.
I recall chatting with dad early on about where to house his papers. The Rosen College of Hospitality Management at UCF combined with its strategic location in Orlando were compelling factors in his decision. Today, the Harrison “Buzz” Price Papers from 1952 to 2006 are contained in 146 boxes at the UCF Libraries Special Collections & University Archives.
He began his career by assisting with the placement of Disneyland in Anaheim, California in the early 1950’s and later Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida in the 1960’s.
If you are researching for a school paper, want to discover theme park industry information, or just want to geek out a little on a true treasure trove, the Buzz Price Collection is a great place to poke around.
The papers are divided into eight series: Images, Price Company Files, Project Research Materials, Proposals, Reports, Speeches, Subject Research Materials, and World’s Fairs.
